The awesome destructive might and continent-shrinking mobility of a WW2 army came with strings. While an antique army could fragment at will and locust everything it needed from the countryside it passed through, its 1939-45 equivalent was an essentially indivisible organism, a tangle of dangerous tentacles emanating from a cumbersome organ-clump of vital support staff, equipment, and stores. The unmissable Unity of Command 2 recognises this with a set of mechanisms that are masterpieces of abstraction, and in doing so, breathes new life into operations ludologised countless times before. Although 2×2’s second hex-clad, IGOUGO WW2 offering can trace its origins all the way back to Panzer General, unlike the clutch of modern PG descendants, it’s a game silver-templed strategists like myself can play without risk of déjà vu.

Unity of Command 2 is built around letting you select what kind of punch you want to throw.

This leads us to the game’s biggest new idea: Headquarters. Just like in the first game, individual units can move or attack. But they also belong to different army headquarters that have command points available for special types of attacks abilities. If a unit is within the command radius of its HQ, it has the option of performing special actions by paying a few command points. What this mostly enables is combo-attacks that you can use to whittle down and break strong enemy positions. For instance, if I simply send one of my always-precious British tank divisions against a strong division of German troops who are entrenched in a range of hills, my tankers are going to get demolished. But what I can do in Unity of Command 2 is have an adjacent infantry unit to use its attached artillery unit. Extremely Realistic Siege Warfare Simulator

to blast the German position and suppress some of the defenders. Then I can employ another unit to launch a “set-piece” assault that inflicts even more suppression and breaks their fortifications. It still hasn’t done any real damage to the underlying German unit. After all, suppression acts like temporary damage, a bit like recoverable health in a fighting game: Within this one turn, its suppressed strength won’t be counted, but it would regain that strength on the following turn as the suppression wears off and the unit resupplies. But now it won’t get any bonuses from its fortifications thanks to the “breach” effect removing them. Unity of Command 2 has the same baselines that made the first UoC a success. Every division on the battlefield is made up of sections called steps.

Dynamic Campaign — Rewrite the history of the Second World War with a branching campaign where no two playthroughs are alike.

Headquarters — This new feature places army headquarters on the map, from which you will direct unit reorganization, bridging and resupply. Headquarters are not only essential to reinforcing and recovering lost unit strength, but are also able to deploy special abilities such as Emergency Supply, Motorizing units using HQ trucks, and many more. Theater Assets — This feature from the original game is greatly expanded in Unity of Command II. Wreak havoc behind enemy lines by sabotaging infrastructure. Order your aircraft to provide aerial recon, deliver devastating bombing runs, or sustain units behind enemy lines using air supply assets. Bonus Objectives — Participate in optional history-altering “what-if” objectives — earn the opportunity to Rush for the Apennines and smash through German defenses before they dig in. each represented by a little dot below the unit’s model. Sometimes divisions have ‘specialist steps’ of attached assets—like a detached tank company temporarily assigned to support an infantry division. Steps are either active, a full circle, or suppressed, an empty one. When a unit attacks or defends its active steps are multiplied by their combat value, totaled, and compared to the other unit’s total for the odds of various results. If that sounds complicated, it’s not, because the game just shows you the likely results. Sure, there’s a detailed combat resolution table buried in the manual, but you can happily play this (quite complex) wargame without ever looking at it. That feels very good. The combat lets you really focus on what an operations-scale game does best

Fog of War — Deal with your enemies — but you’ll have to find them first.

Reveal enemy positions by capturing stragglers, upgrading the HQ and using its special abilities to uncover enemy special defense markers. Deep Operations — Unity of Command changed the world of turn-based strategy games forever by introducing its signature feature, supply lines. Keep a watchful eye on your logistics while planning to strike deep beyond enemy lines, sever supply lines and encircle enemy units. Accessible Scenario Editor — Unity of Command II features a full-fledged Allied campaign, with the addition of several defining battles of WWII that can be experienced from the Axis side. The game comes with a built-in scenario editor, allowing players to create and share new battlefields using the integrated Steam Workshop support. ZOR: Pilgrimage of the Slorfs

This is a game about orchestrating breakthroughs, exploiting gaps with armor, and strategically blocking chokepoints. The terrain of the western front isn’t about vast encirclements, it’s about pushing over the mountains of central Italy or struggling through the bocage in Normandy. I found especial pleasure in capturing railway depots and balancing supply dumps to keep up with my advancing forces. A well-planned tank breakthrough once allowed me to take a third of italy with little effort by racing up the coast and cutting off the enemy’s supply—though the paratroops that held the vital bridges along the way didn’t make it. The strategy is very simple to manage but just complex enough that it feels like a challenge.
