The game also includes tracks from exciting guest artists. Each track has a unique animated background that moves with the music! Tromboner Cards Use the “Toots” you earn from playing songs to purchase sacks of Tromboner Cards. These cards can be used to unlock new tromboners, new trombone colors, and other mysteries! Controls The game can be played with a controller, but a mouse is recommended. Move your arm forward and back, like a trombone, and the pitch of the note will slide up and down to match! Click or use the keyboard to blow! The sounds your trombone makes are completely controlled by you. The closer you are to the music track, the more points you will earn, but you have the freedom to play anything you want at any time!
Nearly every screen in the game, beginning with the main menu, features one or more baboons. You won’t believe how many baboons there are in this game! As you discover the secrets of the Trombiverse, their purpose may become clear… but only a true Trombone Champ will uncover their full meaning. Trombone Champ has you, a potential Trombone Champ, questing through the world of Trombone Champ to become the Trombone Champ. Having nothing but your wits and trombone, you embark on an epic quest of toots and triumph. Will you survive the slides of doom, or will you fall prey to the baboons? This is about as close as I’ll ever get to playing anything Osu-like. You’ll use your mouse to slide the bar up and down and match your position with the notes. RPG Time: The Legend of Wright
as they slide along the note track that looks somewhat like you’re playing Vocals on Rock Band. You can play this game one handed, or you can use your left hand to activate the notes with your keyboard if clicking and moving the mouse is too much of a strain on your wrist. Some of the songs go incredibly hard on the rapid note changes, but you’ll get the hang of it with some time. You can even slow down the note scrolling to give yourself more time to see the notes coming further along. This game is an incredibly fun time, however it is pretty short. It took about 3.5 hours for me to finish the campaign and all of its achievements, but the humor and surprises kept it fresh and entertaining. a few hours worth of content, but with the promise of new songs.
The game is absolutely brilliant, never had so much fun butchering songs.
The song selection is really varied and fun, the songs aren’t too short or too long that becomes tiring to play. The game depth is surprisingly high, it’s merciful enough that you can easily get a B rank on most songs, but takes a lot of skill to get A’s consistently or even S on the more difficult songs. The only (minor) complaint I have is that the game needs something to identify the tempo of the song better even by improved visual feedback or by letting us hear the drums better. Sometimes there are other brass instruments and can be hard to identify where we must play in time to be in our place among the other instruments. Other than this the game is absolutely fantastic and it’s a good way to introduce players to a less known instrument. Return to Monkey Island
As a classically trained percussionist, this is 100% exactly what I believe life would be like if I were a tromboner. Kidding aside, this is harder than it looks, but easier than it seems. It is, for the most part, “fair”. You *will* get better, and just like playing a real trombone you *will* learn where to stop your mouse to play the correct note. The good thing is, failing sounds hilarious, so you’re never really frustrated. You will see a warning about a jumpscare. In terms of video game jumpscares go, it is a very tame one, so if those make you uneasy, the one here isn’t bad. I would have normally turned the setting off but didn’t, and I was fine. (The fact that it is a setting is a great thing, though!) There is a game-within-a-game that you have to hunt for easter eggs to dig deeper into
Trombone Champ offers a nice balance of casual fun for those just looking for a good time
and rhythmic difficulty for the rhythm game perfectionists playing; this is done without any difficulty levels for individual songs, which is different from rhythm games I’m personally used to but still works out well here. The reward system is a great pull to keep playing; the customization options are cute and giving the avatars their own names is a unique touch. The story(or lore I guess?) and humor is really fun imo, but I can imagine the ‘randomness’ of it all being a turn off for a few. I’m still blown away by this funny little rhythm game niche Holy Wow has built into- exploiting the player’s imperfections and putting them ON BLAST, yet making it work so satisfyingly! I’ve never wanted to mess up in a rhythm game so badly Imp of the Sun
and even when I mess up on accident I do so with a big smile on my facelove rhythm games. I’ve been surrounded by music and playing music since I was 8, half of that time dedicated to clarinet and the other half percussion and whatever else I can get my hands on now that I’m beyond my 20s and just play music for fun. Let me just say this game hits that funny (trom)bone hard. Being thrown headfirst into this game with questions about the intro and then just the fact that the controls are very much trombone like (don’t change it it’s a lot more fun this way) with songs everyone knows and originals that go SUPER hard. You start to play and don’t realize just how sensitive the controls are, you tap your keyboard desperately trying to meet the notes with the slider going all over the place and making your attempt at music sounds.
