Combine the body parts with the appropriate characteristics and attacks to find the perfect combination of survivability, speed, and combat power.  The game is very simplistic in it’s presentation, and honestly that is a good thing. The game initially looked like it was somewhat oversimplified, but that was a false impression. You will probably die your first time before your screen is absolutely packed with sprites and effects. You can get body parts by walking over graves, or by upgrading a slot in your base. These upgrade-slots need to be earned however by destroying “lairs” which constantly spawn enemies, that will walk your way, once provoked. You try out what works, how everything works, fail, try again, and it simply hooked me. The game looks nice and sounds nice. The mechanics mostly achieve what they want and carry the whole experience. Clear recommend, especially for less then 5 bucks. This is a steal! Updated and revised further thoughts including criticism: The game heavily depends on the mechanics, so issues here are somewhat annoying.

Undead can only recieve very limited commands. This is part of the design, as the focus lies on creating interesting combinations and less on managing an actual army of intelligent actors, which they definitely are not. This however directly affects what kind of monsters you *should* build as not to cause yourself too much trouble. A balancing act that I quite like. However in the past even a lowly skeleton you created to pick up resources might have triggered a lair way above your current capabilities and you HAD to micro them. As of the Big Brain Update 1.1 this behaviour is still in place (there is no area limitation or similar), but now the game gives you at least the option to let your undead stand still and therefore defend your home, guard critical attack routes or stop currently exploring dead from making more of a mess, when you are in a pickle (in the past you just had to kill them). What in the past effectively encouraged you to never actually build a lot of dead now at least gives you an option to react to your mistakes, which I like. This does not mean that this system is flawless. It’s still annoying when you summon a lot of dead and they mess up big time and you loose your trust in their behaviour. I found myself building ranged undead for home defense, replacing them when I needed better home defenders and building a single strong dead, which I controlled myself to raid lairs, since the ai is somewhat unable to deal with them itself.

Build necro labs to grow body parts and make techno-magic devices to upgrade your army of the dead.

The standard “explore” behaviour is very obviously not what you actually want them to do. They will look for the currently closest loot they can find and beeline to it. When they encounter an enemy, that takes precedence and they engage in combat with them. This leads to mountains of unaccessed loot right next to your tower, but the undead you summoned followed this trail of shiny nonsense right into the desert … aaaand now I am dead. The default 1.1 combat AI also is pretty useless sometimes. If you have a dead actually capable of destroying a lair, it also needs to vastly outpace the spawned enemies. As of 1.2, that’s not easy! When an undead triggers a lair, the lair will produce enemies which take precedence. Since they first run to your base, any undead in the vicinity will follow them back to your home or get lost when the distance is too high, and then just, you know, follow the loot instead of deal with the lair. When an undead is actually attacking a lair, it will just squat over it, like it owns the place. While quite the power move by something so dumb, when enemies spawn, they just attack it immediately and it will die. As of 1.1 the spawned enemies also enegage your undead. So for your undead _not_ to die, they need to be able to take the initial hit, AND be fast enough to get enough distance between them and the spawned enemies. Oh and since it now wanders around while fighting, it might kill the enemies and again.. not re-engage the lair and just… follow the trail of loot.

Guide your hordes of the undead through more than a dozen biomes to find the keys to escape from this strange world.

So on top of that, your undead needs to be *so* strong, that it can kill ALL spawned enemies quickly enough, in order to be still close enough to the lair to re-engage it. I made this seems quite negative… It is a vast improvement over how the release version of the game was, which I recommended nonetheless! The improvements made it possible to be more nit-picky in the first place. With Version 1.1 and upwards you feel like you have a chance and messing up is totally your fault. I was actually able to clear the map fully. This bugged the game out and everything became laggy, sprites stopped disappearing and everything just flew across the screen. I think it’s because there just was no “nearest” target for stuff and that is quite vital for the mechanics of the game. I don’t think the devs intended you to actually clear the map. Use this sneaky bug-report to date this review.

Whatever mechanics issue remain, the game is a lot of fun and having spent so much time already, I would have been happy to pay a higher price! I’m already hoping for dlc or a sequel. The rough edges that were present especially in the release version of the game are gone and I think this game is well worth it’s price. In terms of tower defense, you really only have 1 tower, it doesn’t move. You have some upgrades and spells to defend it, but you mostly want to try and keep enemies away from it by spawning new units. Marvel Avengers Deluxe Edition
