Hypercharge Unboxed is a first-person action tower defense.
set in an alternative world where toys have acquired sentience and battle against each other in domestic environments. Players will be defenders for the faction of Sgt. Max Ammo and tasked with protecting the vital Hypercores, your centers of operation, using a series of traps, turrets and weapons. Enemy forces vary from simple foot soldiers to advanced tanks and giant robots. For the rest, there isn’t really a storyline to follow, every level is stand-alone. Very good visuals and physics with expansive map design. Several original gameplay mechanics that give a new twist to the tower defense genre. Good variety of enemies that also changes considerably in each difficulty, adding new ones. Decent overall balance when playing with a full 4 player complement. The Mean Greens – Plastic Warfare
Many collectibles, secrets and additional challenges to complete for cosmetics and other items. There are modes for all to play – and even little ‘party game’ style games (Spinners mode and Tank battles). First of all, the visual style of Hypercharge is absolutely great and really reminds of the movie “Small Soldiers”, and probably was inspired to it. Puts average domestic environments under a new perspective and also makes the action great, with enemy dismemberment and permanent corpses on the field. Gameplay wants to give a different twist to the TD formula, and succeeds: players need to traverse levels in a platforming fashion to get resources and weapons, while also have to balance Battery energy between shields and turret power, all while being fast because of time limits to build.
Gameplay is divided into Preparation, Building Phase and Defense Phase.
Happens in the lobby and here each player can select three towers or traps to bring to the battlefield, among those unlocked so far. The session host also selects one of the four difficulties and one or more maps in the levels queue. Some maps need to be unlocked first. Customizing your character with a good variety of cosmetics and nicknames is also possible, and also these are unlocked by completing levels or collectibles. Building Phase Begins immediately once starting a level and after each wave. Each lasts 3 minutes, with any player number. during this phase, you’ll need to gather as many resources as possible around the map, in the form of packs or coins, through some platforming jumps. Batteries and random weapons / attachments are also found in maps Door Kickers 2: Task Force North
and are important to have better firepower and to fuel Hypercore Shields / Turrets. Batteries can also be recharged if the Charger is found in a map. During this phase you can also repair any damaged structures, exchange coins with your teammates, or visit shops to get better weapons. It can be skipped if all players agree to. Defense Phase Begins after the Building one, and is composed of one wave each time. The game will not tell you direction, path or type of enemies coming the next wave, so this makes planning a defense difficult, and not at all in line with how a tower defense should be. During this phase you cannot build or repair, so players will focus on shooting enemies and replacing exhausted batteries if there are spare ones. Players have a major impact on firepower, as much or even more than turrets, so having more people in a team really makes the difference.
HYPERCHARGE Unboxed is a pleasant surprise.
Each enemy when killed drops coins or rarely Batteries or Packs, one of the many random factors that might make or break a successful run. Some enemies have erratic behavior and can get stuck in your Hypercore, damaging it massively by pure luck – totally at random. Combat is fun by all means but several balance issues and lackings make it less fun than it could be. Also, managing very distant core with less than 4 players proves impossible in some maps. I absolutely love Co-Op wave based survival games and tower defense games so seeing this pop up on Steam’s Upcoming was exciting. I decided to just go for it with semi-low expectations and pick it up on release for $15 and I’m honestly glad I did. In it’s current state, an early pre-alpha Guns Gore & Cannoli

The visuals are incredible, mechanically it’s very solid, combat and movement is polished and fluid, has a great and fitting soundtrack and overall the audio is pretty good.
