You swing at the ball and, depending on how hard and what angle you hit it at, it will direct your shot. You want to aim at the sweetspot (outside edges) or angle your shot to bounce off of one or multiple walls. The object, just like pong, is to outwit and outshoot your AI opponent looking to return your serve.
HoloBall is a mix between Pong and racquetball, stylized with Tron-like art animations.
The gameplay is simple: score against an AI by hitting the ball with one of your paddles. The game’s difficulty ramps up as it continues and each round introduces a modifier such as speeding up the AI or increasing hit power. Leaderboards encourage replayability and I’d love to see online multiplayer in the future. One thing to note is that you’ll be swinging your controllers pretty hard. Make sure you have adequate play space and are aware of your position in your room. I’d personally like to see an outline of the play space much like Space Pirate Trainer to increase positional awareness. (Update: The developer has since added this along with other suggestions sent pre-release. Excellent turn around!) My play space is about 3.3m x 2.8m and I didn’t have any issues beyond being overly cautious. Space Block Buster
HoloBall takes a classic game into the world of VR and executes on this idea well. This is well worth the cost of admission, especially once you consider the launch sale. Very fun to play, easy to pick up and hard to master (I can’t make it beyond the Hard difficulty). I love this visual style, reminicent of the old Tron movie mixed with some polygon backgrounds from the old Virtual Boy era. Sense is scale is really nice, feels like you are in a big hall/hangar. One thing I absolutely loved was the haptic feedback of the racket. It has this long veil/ribbon streaming out of the back and as you move it, you feel it swoosh around. Really sold me on having that sci-fi racket in my hand instead of the Vive controller. HoloBall is a great little mashup of racket-ball and pong, mixed with the post-apocalyptic robot humor that reminds me a bit of GladOS from Portal.
It’s very simple but fun. Would greatly benefit from multiplayer with other players online.
Perhaps a game mode where you are in a tunnel of some sort against the other player on other side. (sort of like air hockey) If Holopoint is the game that will make you hate the Vive’s breakout box, Holoball is the game that will make you hate its wrist straps. I personally haven’t had any experiences with anyone letting go of the controller yet, but I’ve seen plenty of evidence elsewhere, and it’s a bit telling that Nintendo has suddenly sold out of every color of wrist strap except the basic white, so if you don’t always keep a good grip or know someone who might not be too careful then you might want to get a beefier wrist strap before you play this one. As for the game itself, it’s simple but fun, like most of the cheaper Vive games I’ve played. FLASHOUT 3
It’s sort of like pong mixed with tennis, in which you play against an AI. If you’ve got a spectator they can also take over the AI and play with WASD, but in my experience they won’t stand a chance and it’s better to just leave it to the computer. There are four difficulties that you unlock as you complete the previous one, and it can be a pretty good workout on the later difficulties. It’s not necessarily the sort of thing that’s super impressive on a technological level, but for the price it offers a fair amount of entertainment unless you manage to break your wrist strap, in which case the only people being entertained may be the TV repair company. If you like racquetball, the classic game Pong and the film Tron, you’re going to absolutely love this game.

You actually have two paddles, one for each hand… and your computer opponent will fire off comments from time to time. You do need a bit of space to play this, Be very mindful of your chaperone box. Playable in a 2m square , but a 3mx2m rectangle would be better with plenty of side clearance A masterpiece of VR simplicity. It’s pong, in VR. Yet it’s also so much more. The amazing soundtrack, the snarky AI, the perfect art design, and the challenge that ramps up in just the right way. It’s one of my essential VR experiences. If you have multiple play areas available, then use the one with the most width. This gives the AI a wider area to return the ball and makes the game even better. As a fan of the ‘outrun’ subgenre, this game is absolute perfection. Koi-Koi VR: Love Blossoms
The aesthetics are perfectly in tune with the visuals, the glowing pinks and blues mesmerizing as you duel the hateful A.I., all the while getting your blood pumping through intense acrobatic and badass motions with your lazer batons. Recommended, but with a caveat. You *need* a large play area for this. Large enough to set your chaperone bounds and leave a full arms-length plus controller between the edge of the bound and the wall. The reason for this is the game gives you no safety buffer, so the ball can, and *very* frequently will, come at you right at the edge of your bound. Making it extremely hard, if not impossible to hit without smashing your controller into the wall. So 80% of the time the ball will come at you in a way that leaves you two choices: intentionally allow it to pass by and lose a point.
